new CRCD
142 amptext + bass/Blk w bear (CDR)
$8 - newest
split release in the series between amptext
+ bass
(Daniel Barbiero on bass, Gary
Rouzer on amplified textures),
which gives us five tracks of abstract musings mixing various
articulations of a string bass accompamied by myriad found sound and
micro-percussive treatments. Quiet and pensive, always with something
new to say. Blk
w bear
(aka J.S. Adams, Doug Poplin, P.D. Sexton, Renee Shaw) is a nice
contrast presenting a bigger sound using loops, cello, bass and
effects to all. Four tracks of droning chaos and timbre massacre
incorporating elements of glitch and sonic corrosion. The sound of
things falling apart. Comes in the usual split release art paper
covers in vinyl sleeves.

134 'kirchenkampf' "Dark Planet" (CDR)
$8 - this is a space travelogue starting with the sound of
the ship as the crew slumbers. It moves to feelings
of homesickness as the crew realizes just how far away home is. They
finally arrive at the planet and experience a magnificent eclipse.
They land on the planet and explore its often frightening landscape.
The moon rises and bathes the planet with reflected light. Now they
sit and wait for the first sunrise.

Thomas Dimuzio & Andre Custodio/Conure "Street

performances. Thomas Dimuzio
has been in operation since the Cassette Culture days. Here he gives
us a track recorded live with Andre
Custodio (aka, Nihil Communication, Say Bok Gwai) in San
Francisco, CA, who use live sampling, processing, and synthesizer. Conure
(aka, Mark Wilson, 15 Degrees Below Zero) uses processed sounds from
the streets of Manhattan, recorded live at the Pussycat Lounge in NY.

Michael Khoury and Sax/flutist Fred Bergman, supplemented by

rhythm and tonality present to give us something to hold on for this
wild ride.

CRCD
129 Jeph Jerman/AMK (CDR)
$8 - tenth release in the split series, a treat
for the ears if you like abstract sound. Jeph gives us one long
track of layered noise, primarily from a 22" gong, the overtones
rising and falling, sometimes sounding like bells, other times a bit
angrier like feedback. The action is in the details here. AMK
presents us with two shorter tracks, the first using cut-ups (or is
that turntablisms), the second using processed records (or so it
seems to me) as source material.

CRCD 125
Michael Gendreau "Voûtes"
(CDR) $8 - Les Voûtes (Paris,
France) 16 June 2004 - This installation performance integrated the
unique layout of this group of arch-shaped vaults (photographs at
lesvoutes.org) located under the rue Tolbiac in Paris. Due to the
thick masonry, the vehicles on the road above are generally not
audible in the performance space below, but they cause
micro-vibration which is not perceivable without sensitive
instruments. Several seismic accelerometers were installed in the
brickwork to sense and then amplify the vibration to audible levels.
Furthermore, the shape of the structure alters the frequency content
of the vibration so that the amplified vibrations take on various
characters depending on the measurement location within an arch.
Vibration recordings were made throughout the day of the performance
from different points in the structure, which were then organized and
combined with a live feed from the (stereo) vibrations from the
vaults on either side of the performance vault.

CRCD 124
Fred Lonberg-Holm/Brekekekexkoaxkoax (CDR)
$8 -
eighth in the
split series of disks we have the feedback acoustic sounds of
Fred Lonberg-Holm a longtime artist in the avantgard of sound making.
Here he uses his cello as a vibration source for his feedback sounds.
There is the sense that Fred really listened to what he was doing
rather than just letting the instrument squeal away in abandon.
Brekekekexkoaxkoax takes a more acoustic path using various
instruments in a playful free form expression.

123 Embracing the Glass/Haslam (CDR) $8 -
seventh in the split series we
have two artists who take the ambient minimalist route. EtG's use of
guitar, electronics and wordless vocals give us a dreamy mental
landscape that encourages a relaxed state of mind - a bit sad and a
bit creepy at times, it won't put you to sleep, but it won't bang you
on the head either - Haslam's work follows in the same steps as
EtG but is all electronic - the difference is in the sustained sense
of awe and foreboding - his work is much darker in tone - limited to
100 copies.
